During Monday a Facebook entry was shared in Sweden – from a few hundred shares to more than 7000 in one afternoon. In it a woman in southern Sweden, called Madeleine, describes how her close friend Marcia Karlsson was brutally beaten to death by her ex boyfriend, a man living at a home for asylum seekers.
”On January 10 2014 Marcia was going to pick up her two adopted children. She was overjoyed. This did not happen. A man that had been jilted by her said the following: “if I can’t have you no one else will either”. So the murderer knew what he was doing that morning a little more than a week ago” she writes.
And the feelings among sharers are clear and filled with emotion. ”Are we to stand this?” one person writes. ”Send the fuckers to prison and then out of the country forever!” another one writes and is seconded by a third who writes ”Single ticket immediately (with smashed knee caps.. at least) !!!!!!!”
But Marcia Karlsson doesn’t exist, according to the Swedish national registration. There is no police report about a murder in Jönköping, according to the police. And there is no preliminary hearing going on in a court in the area, as Madeleine has claimed.
The woman in the photos is actually a woman called Hennie. She has no idea about who Marcia Karlsson is or what is to have happened to her and has never heard of Madeleine.
“When I was tagged I read the words “rest in peace, dear friend”, then I started to get worried about what my family would think. Then I read the page and I feel pretty violated by then using my picture, she says.
The single source of the claims about Marcia is Madeleine, but she says all information comes from a mutual friend, Patricia. Patricia in her turn points to a relative of Marcia called Erik. He is supposed to be a policeman and has just started a Facebook account that is linked to Marcia’s.
Marcia is Erik’s only friend. If you google Erik’s profile photo you discover that it a year old American genre picture that has been used in completely different circumstances, hundreds of times.
It is through him Patricia and Madeleine are supposed to have received all news about Marcia. That she has been assaulted. And he is supposed to have said that it was guy from a home from asylum seekers that murdered her and that was the reason no papers were reporting about the case.
Madeleine says she feels violated by being used. She is active in public debate, dislikes all religions and is not afraid to say so. She says she thinks racists may use this to spread propaganda.
“For two years I’ve been in contact with her. For two years I’ve had no reason to doubt that it’s her. I feel as fooled as everybody else. It is my credibility as a person that is at stake, so I also feel deeply violated,” she tells Metro over the phone.
And still her post about Marcia’s murder keeps on spreading.
