A team from University West near Trollhättan is working to perfect a new method for creating complex metal components. The project, known as RMS and based at the nearby Innovatum technology park, involves the robotically controlled forging of metal pieces. The goal is to have users design a tool on a computer and ”print” it, launching a process which forges the component from metal threads.

The process results in pieces which are stronger and cheaper to produce than those made via traditional methods. Aerospace company Volvo Aero and car manufacturer Saab Automobile have expressed an interest in the project.

“With this technology we can get cheaper aircraft components, for example,” said Volvo Aero’s Peter Jonsson.
